Twenty-six ships from the U.S. Navy and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, including ships from the George Washington Carrier Strike Group, transit together at the conclusion of exercise Keen Sword 2013. Keen Sword 2013 is a biannual exercise held to enable the United States and Japan to train in coordination procedures and heighten interoperability needed to effectively defend or respond to a crisis in Japan and the Asia-Pacific region. Staten Island, NY - Marines of 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit arrive in Staten Island, N.Y., Nov. 4. The Navy-Marine Corps team is well-equipped to respond to national disasters when required, through the coordination of U.S. Northern Command. Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Handling) 3rd Class Andre Nation directs a chock and chain crew away from an MH-65D Dolphin helicopter assigned to Coast Guard Squadron (CG) 65 on the flight deck of the amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1). For prudent planning, the Navy has begun to preposition Wasp, USS San Antonio (LPD 17), and USS Carter Hill (LSD 50) for primary assistance in the affected Northeast region if required by FEMA following the devastation brought on by Hurricane Sandy.
