Cpl. Justin Gaertner, a Marine with the Wounded Warrior Regiment practices for the 2012 Warrior Games at Colorado Springs, Colo., April 23. The Warrior Games is a competition between wounded warriors from all military branches and includes swimming, track and field, cycling, shooting, archery, sitting volleyball, and wheelchair basketball. The 2012 Warrior games will run from May 1 through May 5.

31st MEU

A Marine with 2nd Platoon, Company B., Battalion Landing Team 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, crawls through a watery ditch and under concertina wire during the Jungle Endurance Course here, April 20. After completing a two-week training evolution at the Jungle Warfare Training Center, the Marines underwent the four-mile-long course through the Okinawan jungle, utilizing the rappelling, rope-crossing, improvised stretcher carry and other skills they learned. The 31st MEU is the only continuously forward-deployed MEU and remains the nation's force in readiness in the Asia-Pacific region.

Marines serving with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 268 (Reinforced) clean USS Makin Island's flight deck here April 18. The squadron serves as the aviation combat element for the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit. The unit is deployed as part of the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, currently a U.S. Central Command theater reserve force. The group is providing support for maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet area of responsibility.

Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton

Members of Camp Pendleton's K-9 unit pose with former Cpl. Megan Leavey and Military Working Dog Rex during Rex's retirement ceremony and adoption at the base's K-9 unit, April 6. Leavey, who was previously Rex's handler, had written a letter to Congress requesting to adopt Rex since he was being forced to retire due to facial paralysis. Rex served in three combat deployments and provided over 11,575 hours of military working dog support consisting of over 6,220 vehicle inspections during random anti-terrorism searches. Rex was constantly put in harms way during multiple firefights, mortar attacks and improvised explosive devices during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

A MV-22 Osprey aircraft prepares to land at Tactical Landing Zone Pheasant in the Greater Sandy Run Area aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 266 spent nearly eight hours providing flight operations for Company C, 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion's jump. The recon Marines conducted jump operations from March 12 - 16, which included low-level static line, high altitude opening and high altitude low opening jumps.
