South Bend and Mishawaka, Indiana; November 6, 2012

Staten Island, NY - Marines of 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit arrive in Staten Island, N.Y., Nov. 4. The Navy-Marine Corps team is well-equipped to respond to national disasters when required, through the coordination of U.S. Northern Command. While the military plays an important role in disaster response, all our efforts are in support of FEMA first and foremost, who coordinate closely with state and local officials.

Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Handling) 3rd Class Andre Nation directs a chock and chain crew away from an MH-65D Dolphin helicopter assigned to Coast Guard Squadron (CG) 65 on the flight deck of the amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1). For prudent planning, the Navy has begun to preposition Wasp, USS San Antonio (LPD 17), and USS Carter Hill (LSD 50) for primary assistance in the affected Northeast region if required by FEMA following the devastation brought on by Hurricane Sandy. San Antonio and Carter Hall got underway Oct. 31 from Norfolk, Va., and began transiting north to the affected areas on Nov. 1. U.S. Navy photo by Seaman Andrew B.
